The Best Photo Shoot Locations In & Around Grand Rapids, Michigan

Looking for the best photo locations in Grand Rapids, Michigan? As a Grand Rapids family photographer, I have photographed sessions throughout West Michigan and have found some of the most beautiful locations for family photos, maternity sessions, engagements, and senior portraits. From Lake Michigan beaches and sunflower fields to downtown architecture and peaceful wooded trails, these are my favorite photography locations around Grand Rapids.

As a Grand Rapids family and lifestyle photographer, one of the questions I’m asked most often is:

“Where should we take our photos?”

The good news is that West Michigan is filled with incredible locations—from beaches and wildflower fields to downtown streets and quiet wooded trails. The best location isn’t always the most popular one—it’s the place that fits your family’s personality and the story you want to tell.

Here are some of my favorite places for photo sessions in and around Grand Rapids.

1. Prairie Wolf Park

Fall family session in the golden hour.

Nestled in Caledonia, just southeast of Grand Rapids, Prairie Wolf Park is one of my favorite hidden gems for family photography. If you’re looking for a location that feels peaceful, natural, and full of variety, this park has so much to offer.

One of the things I love most about Prairie Wolf Park is that every part of the park feels a little different. As we walk through the trails, we’ll find wide-open prairie fields, tall native grasses, wooded paths, and beautiful pockets of soft evening light. The changing scenery allows us to create a gallery that feels diverse while staying in one location.

One of the park’s most charming features is its old apple orchard. The orchard adds so much character and is especially beautiful in late summer and throughout the fall. The mature apple trees create a rustic, storybook setting that feels cozy and timeless, making it one of my favorite places for families with young children. Little ones love exploring between the rows of trees, and those candid moments often become some of my favorite photographs from the session. The orchard is also a popular backdrop for engagement, family, and seasonal portraits.

Beyond the orchard, Prairie Wolf Park features a mix of paved and natural trails that wind through meadows and wooded areas. The variety of landscapes means we can capture everything from playful family moments in open fields to quiet, intimate portraits beneath the trees. During golden hour, the warm sunlight filtering through the grasses creates the dreamy, timeless look so many of my clients love.

One of the biggest reasons I recommend Prairie Wolf Park is that it rarely feels overcrowded compared to some of the more popular parks around Grand Rapids. That means your family can relax, your children have space to explore, and we can focus on creating genuine moments without constantly waiting for other visitors to pass by.

Perfect for:

  • Family sessions
  • Maternity sessions
  • Couples
  • Engagement sessions
  • Senior portraits

Best seasons:

  • Spring: Fresh greenery and blooming trees
  • Summer: Lush prairie grasses and warm evening light

Whether you’re hoping for playful family photos, a romantic engagement session, or a cozy maternity session surrounded by nature, Prairie Wolf Park offers a little bit of everything. It’s one of those locations that photographs beautifully in every season and always provides a timeless backdrop for telling your family’s story.

2. Grand Ravines County Park

If you’re looking for one location that offers a little bit of everything, Grand Ravines County Park is one of my absolute favorites in West Michigan. Tucked away in Jenison, just a short drive from Grand Rapids, this park offers an incredible variety of scenery that allows us to create a gallery with several different looks—all without ever leaving the park.

One of the most iconic features is the suspension bridge overlooking the Grand River. It adds a unique architectural element to your gallery while still blending beautifully with the natural surroundings. Beyond the bridge, you’ll find wooded hiking trails, open grassy meadows, scenic overlooks, and peaceful river views that create a timeless backdrop for every type of session.

Another reason I love Grand Ravines is because it works well for so many different personalities. If your children love to run, climb, and explore, there are plenty of open spaces for them to play naturally while I capture genuine moments of connection. If you’re hoping for a quieter, more intimate feel, the wooded trails and river overlooks offer peaceful corners with beautiful light and fewer distractions.

Because of its variety, Grand Ravines is one of those locations where your final gallery feels like it was photographed at multiple parks. We can move from the open field to the woods, then to the suspension bridge and Grand River, giving you a collection of images that feels diverse while maintaining a cohesive, timeless look.

How to Choose the Right Location

The best location isn’t necessarily the prettiest one.

It’s the one that feels most like you.

If your family loves hiking and nature, a wooded trail might be perfect.

If you spend every summer at Lake Michigan, a beach session may tell your story better.

If you love coffee shops and city life, downtown Grand Rapids might be exactly the right fit.

When you book with me, I’ll help you choose a location that matches your personality, your family’s energy, and the overall look you’re hoping for.

My Biggest Tip

Don’t stress about finding the “perfect” location.

Beautiful photographs are created because of the people in them—not because of a particular park or beach.

My goal is always to help you relax, connect with the people you love, and create images that feel genuine and timeless.

The location simply helps tell your story.
